Food In the Trenches
Food for the allies was better then the enemy but it was still pretty basic. The rations they were given were bread, vegetables, cheese, jam, tea, pepper, dried fruits, oatmeal biscuits, flour. Out of all of this you wouldn't get them all. So for example you would get dry fruit if fresh veg wasn't available or maybe biscuits instead of bread. Alcohol and tobacco were included in the rations. You could get a 1/4 pint of rum or a pint of stout beer and a small quantity of tobacco.Food in the Trenches for the soldiers was known as a luxury.rarely was hot food prepared for the soldiers when a battle was on going (infull flow) or in imminent. However food was easily accessible when war was at stand-down. Life for the Triple Entente was very deprived compared to the contrasting life of the Triple Alliance.

Food at Home
During the first world war food shortages became an issue in Britain . Britain had imported two thirds of its food supply and the German u- boat blockade and the destination of the ships bringing in the supplies lead to a crisis - people were starving, so they had to think of new ways to get food, the biggest of these was allotments. People would have a little bit of land each and they could grow what they chose on it i.e potatoes carrots and other vegetables. Prior to the war people who had allotments were seen as eccentrics, but this changed with the need to grow food.
In January 1918, although things were better, rationing was introduced to ensure there was enough food to go round. How to make best use of food and have less waste was vital , a cook book called "Win the War" was published showing people how to make use of what little they had.
